The first home game of the season did not dissapoint the 161 in attendance who were treated to six goals and an entertaining game of football…
The Trojans took the lead after just ten minutes with Adam Lund on hand at the far post to rifle in a half cleared corner but, the scores were level not long after when a defensive misunderstanding allowed an unmarked Ross Duggan to equalise despite a great initial save from Staveley ‘keeper Myles Wright after it came off the crossbar. 1-1 after just twelve minutes…
Michael Burke raced clear onto Morgan James’ through ball and coolly slotted it under Hugo Warhurst to restore the lead on twenty three which Tomas Poole extended ten minutes before half time being on hand to swivel on the spot and finish from close range following great work from Robson Doolan who kept the ball “alive” after a goal line clearance from Cameron Hough.
AFC Mansfield kept at it and got themselves back into the game just after the hour following a great turn on the edge of the box and finish from Ross Duggan grabbing his second of the afternoon to make it 3-2.
They pressed for an equaliser in the remaining twenty or so minutes but substitute Joe Pugh made sure the points stayed at Inkersall Road guiding fellow substitute Matty Davies cross in with a perfectly placed classic centre forwards header.
Final Score: Staveley MW 4 – 2 AFC Mansfield
That now puts us into fifth place in the fledgling table and next up we’re on our Travels again when we face Grimsby Borough at their Bradley Road Football Development Centre ground on Wednesday 21st August with a 7:45pm kick off and we’re next at Inkersall Road on Saturday 24th August when we take another break from the league to welcome Lincoln United in the Fa Cup Preliminary Round for a 3pm kick off.
ps: The Reserves started their campaign away to Newark Town today but unfortunately came away with nothing following a close 1-0 defeat.
