Albion Sports v Trojans

This one saw Staveley make two changes with Michael Burke following his dramatic last second equaliser last time out (v Knaresborough) given his first start since joining the club just before Christmas and Brad Jones returning to right back.

I think its fair to say that 2018/2019 hasn’t been what we’ve come to expect from the hosts and it would be a case of seeing which Albion Sports side would turn up, as their erratic form of winning loads and then losing as many games in succession made the game somewhat difficult to predict.
They included new signing Luke Aldrich in their starting lineup for the first time and the tall centre forward caused a few problems initially as the lions began the game like they may have just found their October form (of 4 wins and a draw from 6 games) once again…

…Albion moved the ball around pretty well for the first couple of minutes looking for Luke Aldrich on several occasions and the lively Marcel Chigumira keeping Jordan Claxton honest down the right hand side, fortunately the Staveley defence stayed resolute enough to keep chances at a premium and slowly but surely their attack got going…

…A brilliant “take” from Myles Wrights goal kick by Michael Burke who killed it stone dead before finding Robson Doolan on the right who brought Matty Davies into play and he tried to bundle his way through but was thwarted by a swarm of defenders and the attack was snuffed out.

Moments late Doolan was involved again over on the left hand side this time spotting and finding the run of Matty Parkin who slipped in between the homes sides two central defenders with a ball clipped over the top, and but for a marginal but probably correct offside decision he would have had a clear run to goal.

The Trojans were now “in the game” but so were Albion and a freekick lofted in from the left and although the initial cross didn’t result in a chance at goal it wasn’t dealt with convincingly enough and a shot from the right was blocked just before it went in.

After that end to end first fifteen minutes the game finally began to swing in the Trojans favour when firstly a determined Robson Doolan chased a lost cause to deny Kesy Omolokon an easy clearance from right back which eventually presented Sam Finlaw a chance to shoot but good defending saw it blocked.

The “unplayable” Matty Davies had been involved in pretty much everything so far went closest after chasing to win the ball back he turned defence into attack with a one two with Sam Finlaw advanced into the attacking third before popping a strike off the base of the left hand post thanks to the faintest of touches from home goalkeeper Brad Emmerson! The Trojan assault continued with Brad Jones getting to the byline on the right handside to square the ball but unfortunately no one made a run to the near post and a good opportunity was lost however moments later that man again Matty Davies drove towards goal and laid the ball off to Jahmal Riley who sidestepped a defender and drilled the ball low into the goal.

The Trojans didn’t take their foot off the entertainment pedal and went in search of more…twenty minutes in and Jahmal Riley after touches from Jordan Claxton Michael Burke and finally a through ball Matty Davies found himself in another of those marginal offside positions but a minute later Davies was able to find Robson Doolan onside but it was Bradley Emerson who won the one on one contest blocking Doolans effort who then made a bit of a mess of the follow up. He was also able to thwart Jahmal Riley just a couple of minutes later who shoot first time after holding off a defender as they both chased a Jordan Claxton clearance.

There were far too many Trojan chances created to go through them all and Albion had their fair share in the remainder of the half aswell, with Ombeni Ruhanduka and Marcel Chigumira influential and Luke Aldrichs shot across goal forcing a fingertip save to put the ball wide of the far post from Myles Wright being the pick l whose score could’ve really been the proverbial “anything”. As it was however an entertaining half swung further in Staveleys favour right on the whistle… Michael Burke broke down the left and managed to work his way past two defenders to square the ball to Jahmal Riley who heard Matty Parkin screaming at him as he made an untracked run behind Staveleys centre forward and ran over the ball allowing it to reach Parkin who slammed it between the sticks giving Brad Emerson no chance.

Ten minutes into the second half and the game was effectively won when an excellent sliding tackle by Brad Jones to deny an Albion attack presented the ball to Sam Finlaw who sent Matty Davies on his way once more..his perfectly weighted pass found the perfectly timed run of Jahmal Riley who didn’t need to break stride to take it into the box where he unselfishly found his strike partner Micheal Burke who stole in at the far post – ish to side foot the Trojans into a three goal lead.

That lead was increased still further with twenty minutes to go when Jahmal Riley was held in the box and prevented from getting to a cross from the right and Sam Finlaw emphatically smashing the resultant penalty kick, in off the crossbar.

The Trojans had more chances to score notably Matty Parkin who chased down a weak back pass to just pass the ball wide of the post and Jahmal Riley who from close in couldn’t quite find the angle to score following a rebounded Matty Davies effort before Albion grabbed a consolation in the final minute of the game when Sam Denton equally emphatically smashed home a freekick from all of twenty five and possible more yards giving Myles Wright absolutely no chance to save.
