Report: Eccleshill United v Trojans

For the first game of the new season the Trojans took to the field at Eccleshill United giving starting debuts to Adam Lund, Mark Dudley, Jordan Slack and Morgan James with Pat Lindley making his second debut having returned to the club following spells at Osset Albion and Afc Mansfield.

Normally with so many new players you’d expect them to take some time to “gel” but they early on looked like they’d been playing together for years when after just four minutes Mark Dudley Morgan James and Michael Burke combined to give Tomas Poole something to chase down the right hand side. Poole out strengthed, if you like, fullback Tyler Marsh to win the ball and crossed looking for Burke who had continued into the box but couldn’t quite get on the end of it.

Just a minute later Dudley was involved again swinging in a crossfield left to right ball into the box where Matty Parkin rose highest to head the ball looping towards goal looking like it might just drop over Eccleshills goalkeeper Brad Emmerson but instead it hit the top of the crossbar and unfortunately over for a goalkick.

Two more half chances followed inside the first fifteen minutes with Michael Burke after a tenacious Morgan James tackle and pass over the top of the defence just overran it slightly meaning the angle to pull the ball back into the box from the left was tight and Brad Emmerson was able to intercept the cross at his near post and Sam Finlaw following a cleared freekick hit one from the edge of the box but a deflection took the sting out of it and Brad Emmerson was able to gather.

Of course in a game of football its never all one way traffic and having survived a warning shot across the bows in the thirteenth minute when Matthew Storr found Lewis Sugden on the edge of the box to shoot just wide Staveley found themselves, arguably against the run of play 1-0 down five minutes later when..

.. a defensive mix up allowed Chris Lever, who was perhaps lucky to be still on the field after appearing to stand on Joe Cheeseman when the Staveley defender was on the floor, to flick it to Nathan Woodward who, with his back to goal had a lot to do but managed to turn then slot it under the onrushing Trojans ‘keeper Myles Wright.

Staveley went back on the offensive with Joe Cheeseman pinging one from the back out right to Tomas Poole who ran into the box on the angle, shot and brought out the best from Brad Emmerson who pulled off a good save to deny the Trojan number nine. He pulled off an even better save just after the half hour when Michael Burke, this time was able to get in a cross from the left which flashed across the box where Poole three yards out applied the finishing touch and was almost wheeling away in celebration only to see Emmerson from nowhere, fly to his left and deny Poole once more.

There was time for one final attack before halftime which began when Morgan James intercepted a poor pass in midfield and put Tomas Poole in the clear one on one with his nemesis Brad Emmerson, this time however as Emmerson came out to try and block once more he passed square to Michael Burke taking Eccleshills ‘keeper completely out of the game enabling Burke to fire in the equaliser!

The hosts come out with much more attacking intent, almost immediately winning a corner following a good bit of play down their left hand side which, fortunately came to nothing before Lewi Sugdens effort from the edge of the box deflected similarly to Sam Finlaws attempt in the first half harmlessly into the arms of Myles Wright.

Both sides had contributed to a really good game of football so far but the second half yielded only two real clear cut chances typically one for each side.

The seventieth minute saw Adam Lund ping a ball down the right hand channel for Kurtis Morley to chase, starting his seventh season with the Trojans he won the race to the ball with Brad Emmerson and was fouled by Eccleshill ‘keeper. The resultant freekick swung in by Mark Dudley was headed goalwards by Adam Lund but once again Emmerson was on hand to keep it out with yet another stunning save diving down to his left to palm it out.

Four minutes later Staveley had their own goalkeeper to thank as a poor ball across midfield allowed Ryan Hargreaves to intercept and break to send Lewis Sugden in on goal but Myles Wright was equal to it, ensuring the points were shared.
