Staveley MW 0 – 1 AFC Mansfield
It was the visitors who in front of a healthy crowd of 237 got the first game of the season underway and its fair to say that not a lot happened in the opening exchanges…
We did create the first chance of note though in the seventh minute of the game. From a Mitch Langton corner over on the far side Cameron Foulkes pulled away from his marker Jack Gibbs to head towards goal but saw it cleared off the line by a combination of goalkeeper Jason White and the man on the post.
The next chance fell to Afc Mansfield where Luke Walker headed on Thomas Sloans throwin down the far touch line for Lynton Karkach to chase… one he won and a quick glance saw Kian Sketchley running into the box unmarked and he side footed his side into an early lead on nine minutes. VAR might have chalked it off for offside against Karkach but to the eye it was impossible for the assistant referee to judge one way or the other.

Luke Walker got himself into a decent position to add a second five minutes later when visiting captain Sam King found him near the penalty spot after a good run from the wing but a poor first touch, controlling it backwards instead of towards goal allowed Will Eades to clear, Kofi Appiah picked up the loose ball but he fouled Charlie Oglesby trying to burst into the box and we were awarded a freekick.
As the half went on we arguably had the lions share of possession and were creating some nice passing moves but none of it resulted in a clear cut chance in fact Declan Howes turn on the edge of the area and shot which had promise but in the end went well wide was about the best we could muster in the first 45 although that’s almost certainly doing Mitch Langtons effort from a forty third minute freekick from just outside the area a disservice which went close enough to keep Jason White in the visiting goal honest as it went just narrowly over the crossbar…we remained behind at the break however.

There were some encouraging signs.. ten minutes into the second half when Cameron Foulkes advanced with the ball out of defence and found Charlie Bell out wide on the right handside. His low cross flashed across goal and would’ve only needed a touch to get us right back into the game but no one had gambled on the front post to get there infront of goalkeeper Jason White nor the back post just incase, as happened White didn’t make a save, but we did get a corner as Jack Gibbs took no chances and put it out…
From that corner a bit of a scramble ensued before it broke for Pat Lindley who couldn’t quite get enough on the ball to strike towards goal and it was cleared. With around fifteen minutes left Lynton Karkach was put one on one with Rio Alberry in goal by a decent through ball from substitute Jack Hobson, but a great save from our number one at his near post kept us in the game..
Substitutes Kian Tansley and Myron Gibbons injected a bit of urgency and produced a couple of half opportunities with a few mazy runs and decent long range efforts on goal but neither they nor the other players in blue and white could fashion that one gilt edged chance to rescue at least the point that we arguably deserved…
