Trojans v Cheadle Town = fa Vase 1st Qualifying round

for the third time in five seasons Cheadle Town made the trip over from the North West to the North East Counties league for the first installment of the premier national competition for sides at this level the Fa Vase…

Staveley got off to the perfect start when Joe Pugh headed in Jordan Claxtons cross inside the first minute! and then went on to create several good looking opportunities to increase the lead with Sam Finlaw testing Daniel Whitting in the visitors goal with the pick of them but…

…They paid the price of not pressing home the advantage, and allowed the visitors back into the game on twenty minutes when Andrew Lunt hit one from outside the box which just curled around the outstretch hand of Myles Wright and in at the far post.

The Trojans thought they’d regained the lead just before halftime when Joe Pugh stuck the ball into the net once more after latching onto a Robson Doolan pass following a swift counter attack but he was denied by a harsh looking offside flag and the sides went in level at the break.

If the first half had belonged to Staveley then the second belonged to Cheadle who were awarded a penalty almost straight away after Charlie Oglesby had executed what looked like a perfectly timed tackle on Patrick Davin as he looked to race clear of Staveleys number five – the ball going the way you’d expect from such a challenge. Paul Sunderland dispatched the spot kick anyhow.

A quickfire third from Warren Gaskin stabbing home at the back post following a freekick threatened to knock the stuffing out of Staveley but they rallied and¬†pulled one back via Micheal Burkes effort from just inside the area which deflected off Oliver Hatfield-Banton looping over Whitting in goal…

However in pushing for an equaliser Staveley were hit on the break and a neat finish from Patrick Davin gave Staveley a mountain to climb and ensured that the Trojans 19/20 Fa Vase race would fall at the first hurdle with another in the dying moments.
