Trojans v Hemsworth Miners Welfare

Perennial title contenders Hemsworth Miners Welfare were in town for the fourth league game of the season one which would be a good barometer of the work put in by the new look Staveley side in the summer.

Brett made two changes to the side that won convincingly in the previous game away at Harrogate Railway bringing Ryan Herbert in for Chris Baugh who picked up a knock in that same game and Liam Greenfield returned to the Midfield.

Both side started the game enjoying decent spells of possession looking to pass around their opponents but it took a while to get going in terms of chances seven minutes in fact as the early season unfamiliarity took hold when making the final pass…

A Staveley attack broke don on the edge of the box and the ball was quickly passed into midfield where Brad Dockerty got hold of it just inside his own half turned and ran at the Trojans defence, who despite not being able to get the ball from him forced him to the leftback area where he could only fire a weak shot across Myles Wright in the Staveley who gathered comfortably enough in the end.

Not long after, the Trojans started creating with Sam Finalw instrumental twice finding Tyla Bell in promising positions just outside the area but he couldn’t quite find the chink of light needed to get a shot away on both occasions but kept the visiting defenders honest with darting runs and probing play and it was he who fed the ball wide left to Robson Doolan to cut into the box and strike an effort that was probably going wide but was close enough for goalkeeper Danny Rusling to have to help the ball on its way giving a corner away in the process…which was initllay clared but sent back in by Liam greenfield where Charlie Oglesbys looping far post header forced Rusling into another save, this time an excellent one handed tip over the bar for another Trojan corner…that one however would eventually only produce a teasing cross which no one in blue and white stripes could get on the end of.

After that flurry of excitement it settled back into its earlier pattern with both sides once again enjoying possession, passing it around but failing to create opportunities with an errant final pass here and there..nonetheless it was still an enjoyable watch.

On the stroke of half time another attack from the visitors broke down on half way with Sam Finlaw feeding the ball left to Jordan Claxton whose cross from deep found an unmarked Robson Doolan running into the box… where he controlled it in the air before looping a volley over Danny Rusling in the Hemsworth goal without letting it touch the floor!

With the visitors being the decent side they are one goal would surely not be enough to grab the three points and the Trojans started the second half looking like they may just get a precious two goal advantage…. immediately from the kick off they the industrious Jahmal Riley caused probems up front holing off Declan Parker to turn finding Adam Baskerville in the box who in turn set up Robson Doolan to strike, forcing yet another decent save from Rusling and another Staveley corner which again came to nothing.

Just before the hour the visitors almost equalised with a Brad Dockerty shot from the edge of the area which flew towards Myles Wrights goal where he somehow got a fingertip to the ball to divert the goal bound effort onto the crossbar.

Thankfully though that was as close as they would come and just after the hour Matty Davies picked the ball up on the right hand side and from fully thirty-ish yards pulled the trigger sticking the ball across a diving Danny Rusling into the far corner of the goal!

And the game was wrapped up fifteen minutes from time when after a slick passing moving involving Robson Doolan, Matty Davies and Brad Jones switching play from the left to the right where Doolan involved once more came out from the attacking line to receive Sam Finlaws forward pass before sending Matty Davies down the wing to square a low pass across the box to Jahmal Riley where a feinted shot fooled the defenders into blocking it leaving him with oceans of space to slide it home.
