Trojans v Winterton Rangers – 16/10/21

Trojans 4 – 2 Winterton Rangers

A quick look at the table pre game would have told you that this was arguably the biggest / toughest game of the season so far, given that our opponents had done well in the cups and as a result had two games in hand on us and were just five points behind, and so were probably in a false position. a win for them and good results in those games in hand would see them jump infront of us by a not insurmountable margin but a difficult one none the less, they also had the leagues top goal scorer Josh Walker!

So could the lads follow on from that impressive display against Emley AFC in the previous game… the short answer is yes. But perhaps not as straightforward as the other night…

Pat Lindley was his combative self and that set the tone for the opening stages of the match as did a ball from back to front from Mitchell Langton for Marley Grant to chase only to see Rangers goalkeeper Nathan Popple run out of his area to kick for a throwing before Grant could get to the ball to attack his goal..

That exact same pass down the same side in the ninth minute of the match this time it was aaron Pride who sent the ball forward with Nathan Popple once again racing out of goal to clear except this time he timed it wrong, got the edge of the area and could only stand and watch as Marley Grant got to the ball first lifted it over him and into the empty net.

We went on the front foot to try and get a second and for a few moments penned in the visitors in their defensive third but they showed that they’d not come he to roll over and began to play their part in what was a really entertaining game of football, passing their way from back to front Jaime Ture had an effort from the edge of the box blocked by Pat Lindley and Sam Kay and then won a corner as they recycled possession down their left hand side as Aaron Pride cleared the attempted cross into the box. The corner came to nothing as far as the visitors were concerned but that allowed a swift counter attack from Declan Howe who ran almost the full length of the pitch before running out of steam as he made the final decision to shoot or cross from near the byline inside the Winterton area and in the end did neither as it went out for a goal kick.

The Visitors again went forward looking for an early equaliser but they found a defensive wall made of blue and white striped shirted Trojans willing to put their bodies in the way to protect the lead..which… was doubled in the twenty first minute when, Luke Chadwicks kick upfield from goal was headed clear by Rangers and headed back into their defensive third by Mitchell Langton where, it was initially won by Declan Howe, knocked down for Rob Worrall who passed out left to Brandon Webster.. Webster advance from the left handside and played a neat one two with Worral once more before hitting it across Nathan Popple and into the far corner to score a his first senior goal for the club one which the fans loved having seen him come through the U21s and reserve teams!

The visitors pulled one back ten minutes before half time with a Ryan Thompson strike from just outside the area following a dubiously given but well worked freekick to the right of our 18 yard box..Paul Grimes supplying the assit by rolling it nicely across the box when it looked like he was going to cross it i

Five minutes later though our two goal advantaged was restored but not before Josh Walker almost equalised with a close range effort that was blocked by Charlie Oglesby on his own six yard line.. Marley Grant again using his pace to race clear down the right hand side but this time squaring to Declan Howe who side footed it home first time!

Rangers would not go away though and went in search of the goal that would brin gthem right back in it, forcing Luke Chadwick into some breathtaking saves with a tip over the bar from a Jamie Ture half volley in particular catching the eye.

They did get that goal however when again Nathan Popple came out of his goal to thwart Marley Grant, this time the ball dropped out of the sky inside our defensive third and fell kindly for Ryan Thompson who took one touch to steady himself, pass across goal with his second and found Josh Walker who couldn’t miss for two yards out with Luke Chadwick out of goal to cover Thompson.

Trojans 3-2 Winterton Rangers

We did always just have to much for them however and just past the hour as Rangers pushed for another goal Marley Grant on the counter attack raced clear down the right handside and squared the ball to Brandon Webster who had tucked in from the left to score his second of the game!
